The University of Pennsylvania: From 1999 to 2006, the College of Arts and Sciences at University of Pennsylvania conducted an experiment to examine the effects of its general education requirement on the educational programs that students construct for themselves. Designed to explore simultaneously several possible new components for the curriculum, the study was a true experiment in which samples of freshmen in the classes entering in 2000 through 2004 were randomly selected to fulfill requirements substantially different from the College’s standard general education requirement. The faculty evaluation committee gathered data about the students' experiences through multiple methods including interviews, focus groups, surveys, and analyses of student records and course evaluations. Although few significant differences were found in the experiences of students in the Pilot Curriculum when compared to those completing the standard requirements, the study informed the faculty of the College as they implemented a new curriculum for the incoming class of 2010 and beyond.
